Blue Zone

Costa Rica

For Explora Costa Rica

On the Nicoya Peninsula in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, lies one of the world’s five Blue Zones. It is the only Blue Zone in Ibero-America and the largest in terms of area. Here, people live longer and in a healthier way.

Mamita Alis and Papito Juan Camarero are natives of Guanacaste who live in the town of Palestina. Through great effort and dedication, they built a traditional Creole family, and thanks to their collective work, they founded La Casa de la Rosquilla.

CREATORS | CURATORS | HISTORYTELLERS

Longevity

At the heart of their home, they produce handcrafted goods, starting from the cultivation, nixtamalization, and cooking of corn. By combining manual labor with their knowledge of firewood, ash, and the clay oven, they ensure production that preserves the traditions of their land, maintaining ancestral techniques.

An active lifestyle, close contact with nature, and strong human relationships are fundamental pillars for achieving a healthy way of life. But in the hands of this couple lies the secret to longevity: a sense of purpose and engaging in meaningful work. For centenarians, working is the reason to live.

It is a source of pride for their family to see how their legacy continues and expands, strong like the Guanacaste trees that grow in the savanna. May they have many more years of life to continue enjoying the traditions of Guanacaste.
